What IS Pilates?
Pilates is the choreographed regimen of exercises and postures originally coined “Contrology” by Joseph Hubertes Pilates.
Over 90 years ago, Joseph Pilates created this unique system of physical conditioning designed to develop the body from the inside out, with an emphasis on stabilizing the musculature of the shoulder girdle, spinal column and pelvic girdle.
Pilates is based on both Eastern concepts of a balanced body and mind and Joseph Pilates’ philosophies of health and fitness, which emphasize posture, body mechanics, correct breathing and spinal flexibility.
Pilates’ theory of physical education utilizes principles of relaxation, concentration, coordination, alignment, breathing, flowing movements, centering and stamina to improve body awareness.
The Pilates system of conditioning strengthens and stretches muscles, as well as mobilizes and opens joints so that no muscle group is over- or under-trained, creating freedom of movement in day-to-day activities.
